Young people are being given the chance to unleash their creativity and perform on the historic stage of Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal as part of two special summer holiday workshops.
The theatre’s Georgian Youth Theatre is hosting a week-long acting course for 11 to 18-year-olds, alongside a magical one-day workshop for younger children.
Running from Monday, August 3 to Saturday, August 8, the Summer Workshop will see participants devise and perform Twisted: The Untold Story, an original production that retells classic fairy tales from the perspective of their villains.
Set in the abandoned Fairytale High Court, the production gives forgotten villains the opportunity to tell their side of the story as heroes and villains take the stand, challenging audiences to question who really deserves the title of hero.
Throughout the week, participants will develop acting and performance skills before staging the production in a public performance on the Georgian Theatre Royal’s stage on Saturday, August 8. The course costs £80.
Meanwhile, children aged six to 10 can immerse themselves in a world of magic during Spellbound, a one-day workshop taking place on Tuesday, August 11.
The session will feature games, storytelling, movement and imaginative play, with youngsters creating magical characters, making their own wands and exploring a world of spells and enchantment. The workshop costs £20.
Both workshops will be led by the theatre’s Youth Theatre Officer, Lucy Booton, who said she hopes they will inspire a new generation of performers.
“These workshops are all about encouraging young people to explore their creativity, build confidence and have fun in a supportive environment,” she said.
“Whether they’re already passionate about theatre or trying it for the first time, they’ll have the opportunity to develop new skills, make friends and create something really special together.”
