A Dales junior rugby team has launched a recruitment campaign after resuming competitive games following a year-long hiatus due to the pandemic.

Wensleydale RUFC U15s, a team made up of boys in school years nine and ten, played their first full-sized game on at home Sunday, losing out narrowly to Wetherby RUFC.

Like other sports, rugby has not been allowed for much of the last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Under RFU rules for the resumption of the sport following the sport, tackling was allowed, although scrums were not and line-outs were uncontested.

Lead coach Dave Loughlin said: “The lads did really well against a strong Wetherby team.

“They’ve not played contact rugby for over a year and there were some tired legs and a few carrying knocks by the end, but also a lot of smiles.

“We’ve got a small squad of 16 and would welcome new players who have maybe tried rugby before and are keen to get started again, or would like to give the sport a go for the first time.”

The squad trains on Friday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and on Sundays from 10am to 11.15am at Cawkill Park, near Leyburn.
